My vision for Dublin South-West

Enriching everyone’s standard of living, by continuing to represent the community using my council and professional experience to frame holistic sustainable policy.

What I stand for

Health and Environment are paramount issues for me. They cover many bases including: education, employment, community and an overall sense of wellbeing. We all have a desire to prosper, and I base my actions and decisions on how communities can achieve this endeavor, whether through national / local policy or assisting communities and individual projects.

My priorities

  • Education. As a lecturer in the Dublin School of Architecture, I have an avid interest in education, and as a councillor this interest has extended to working on and with a number of local school boards of management. This is reflected through engagement in day to day school operations and making representations at local and national levels for improvements to school infrastructure both on and adjacent to individual campuses.
  • Community. This is a mainstay of Irish politics and keeps your feet on the ground, there is a constant flow of issues that require attention. I continue to work with community groups assisting them in their goals, whether it’s about parks, roads, housing etc. I will seek to provide local authority solutions allowing realisation of community ideals.
  • Culture. I have a keen interest in our built heritage from my architectural background and as Deputy Mayor in 2015, I established South Dublin County Council’s Architectural Conservation Forum. The purpose of the Forum is to raise awareness and protect our local built monuments. The Council has many projects, with the current conservation works to Rathfarnham Castle, recently completed Round Tower in Clondalkin, and smaller completed projects like Killininny Tower and Ballymount Gatehouse have all been highlighted and supported.
  • Policy. I have continued to form holistic sustainable policy through the Council, both in the 2016-2022 Development Plan and the monthly council meetings. I ensured that ‘Wood First’, eco-cement and rainwater harvesting became Council policy in any SDCC procurement projects. I have also promoted rights of way through the Dublin Mountains, allowing greater public access to this environmental treasure.

My experience

I am a member of the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly which has a remit to oversee regional economic planning guidelines. Apart from endorsing proper planning in our towns and cities, I am also interested in how we connect our communities. The State must move away from the 2:1 ratio of investment of roads over public transport. We need to increase our efforts to stop the continued growth of our nation’s transport emissions and the truth is our capital city has reached maximum car capacity and reliable public transport is the key to a successful working city. Public transport investment must be prioritised. This is why I made a submission to the Public Consultation on Metro North that Metro North be extended to Rathfarnham, with a future extension to Knocklyon/Firhouse.
